Description:

Abstract:: The Original Townhips layer contains polygons depicting the original subdivision of land into townships that make up Summit County. It was compiled from various historical records, including the Summit County parcel maps, recorded documents, and city and county legislation; and registered as closely as possible to the Summit County parcel maps.
Summit County was created from townships in two original subdivisions, the Connecticut Western Reserve, covering most of the county, and the Congress Lands, covering Green and Franklin Townships. The Western Reserve east of the Cuyahoga and the Old Portage Path (the western boundary of the United States at that time) was surveyed in 1796-97. The portion west of the of this line was not surveyed until after 1805. The Congress Lands were surveyed 1801-1803.
Purpose:: To provide the taxpayers and agencies of Summit County an original townships layer at a scale and accuracy useful for property appraisal, planning, and analysis. The suitability of this dataset for any other uses is not guaranteed and the user assumes all risk for such uses. Summit County, Ohio, assumes no legal responsibility for works derived from this dataset. This dataset should never be relied upon to establish with certainty the location of property lines or the location of any other feature in relation to a property line. To establish a property line, or the relationship of a feature to a property line, the services of a Professional Surveyor, registered to practice in the State of Ohio, must be employed.
