Summit County was created from townships in two original subdivisions, the Connecticut Western Reserve, covering most of the county, and the Congress Lands, covering Green and Franklin Townships. The Western Reserve east of the Cuyahoga and the Old Portage Path (the western boundary of the United States at that time) was surveyed in 1796-97. The portion west of the of this line was not surveyed until after 1805. This is why the townships along this line are subdivided differently on opposite sides of the line. The Congress Lands were surveyed 1801-1803. Today, few records, and no known original monumentation, exist to register the location of the Old Lot boundaries in relation to Summit County's parcel maps.
