Biomonitoring data provide the aquatic organisms' perspective to water quality. Ohio EPA monitors stream health utilizing several biotic indices and include: Index of Biological Integrity (IBI), Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI) scores, Invertebrate Community Index (ICI), and Qualitative Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera (Qual. EPT). The Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) evaluates water quality based upon pollution tolerance levels and the natural history of fish species. The Ohio EPA has developed a quantified methodology to evaluate fish habitat in Ohio streams and rivers (Ohio EPA, 1989). The Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI) considers various characteristics of the available habitats based on their ability to support viable, diverse aquatic faunas. The type and quality of substrate, amount of instream cover, channel morphology, extent of riparian canopy, pool and riffle development and quality, and the stream gradient are the metrics used to determine the QHEI score. Macroinvertebrate communities are sensitive to pollution and other stresses to their environments. Examination of macroinvertebrate community structure provides insight about the long-term water quality conditions.
