Abstract:
Canopy cover was mapped for all forested areas and natural areas where trees are dominant. Only natural forested areas were mapped. Urban forests were not mapped.
Purpose:
The canopy cover study can be used to preserve as many forested areas as possible. Development could be directed away from large blocks of forested land. Natural corridors could be developed between individual forest blocks to develop greenways. Canopy cover maps can be used as baseline studies that in the future can be used to show the increase or decrease of these areas within the county.

Summit County's digital aerial photography (April 26, 2000) was used to identify these areas. The maps are reflective of conditions at that time, and do not show any changes that may have taken place since then. Larger contiguous forested areas were mapped, generally larger than about two acres. Fencerows and very narrow forested strips were not mapped. Areas with greater than 50 percent canopy cover were mapped.

Summit County's digital aerial photography (April 26, 2000) was used to identify these areas. The digital orthophotos were printed at 1:400 scale. Canopy cover were delineated from hard copy maps. The canopy data were digitized in ArcView 3.3 to create the wetlands shapefile. Area and perimeter data were calculated using the ArcView "calculate geometry" script. Acreage attribute data were then added to the attributes from the area calculated.
